Toyota FT-EV concept
04 Feb 2009
The FT-EV is planned to carry four, albeit in close-coupled short-trip comfort. Its range is 50 miles of city adventuring. The FT-EV is only concept car, but Toyota also announced plans in Detroit to bring a similar urban-commuter BEV (battery electric vehicle) into production by 2012.
Toyota says the latest FT-EV concept is a spin-off of the iQ city car it bandied about on the auto-show circuit. The four-seat iQ is, by now, on sale in Japan, and its smart for two-sized proportions make it an easy option to turn into an electric vehicle.
The FT-EV is part of Toyota’s sustainable mobility tactic. Basically, the plan is to create cars with lower fuel spending and fewer emissions. By 2010 the company plan to launch as many as 10 new hybrid models in different global markets and to put up for sale one million gas-electric hybrids.
